TAIPEI: Lee Chong Wei failed to grab a second win in a week against Lin Dan. Yesterday, the world number two lost 18-21, 21-12, 11-21 to the Chinese world number three in the final of the Taiwan Open badminton championships.

And with the defeat, Chong Wei has only affirmed what many have been saying – that he can only deliver in his own backyard.

Yesterday, Chong Wei was slow to find his rhythm, losing the first set 18-21. But he found his way back in the second, sealing the set at 21-12. But he ran out of steam in the decider, losing 11-12 to the Chinese who lost the world’s number one spot to Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark last week.

It was Chong Wei's fourth defeat to Lin Dan. He also lost at the Thomas Cup qualifying tournament in 2004, 2005 Hong Kong Open and this year's All-England.

Chong Wei's only two wins against the formidable Chinese were at the Malaysian Open finals – in 2005 and last week in Kuching.

For Lin Dan, it was sweet revenge yesterday after losing in the most disappointing way to Chong Wei last week.

Then, he had been on the verge of a victory at 20-13 in the decider but allowed Chong Wei to overtake him and win his third consecutive Malaysian Open title.

National chief coach Yap Kim Hock however, was not too disappointed with the defeat.

“Chong Wei continues to show that he is a consistent player. That is important. Currently, he is only having problem beating one or two top players,” said Kim Hock.
