Port View Restaurant

Seafood!!! yup.. that's actually our purpose for the trip. we can skip the mount kinabalu, island, anything u name but definitely not their live seafood.

Port View Restaurant is our venue for dinner on the 1st night at KK. we took a taxi and it was only less than 10 minutes ride from our hotel.

as expected, all the seafood are kept alive in the fish tanks and there are great range of fishes and shells for us to choose. the captain took our order by the fish tanks while we are busy glancing through all the seafood available, and not forgetting to peep on the prices. some of them are really costly, more than twice the price of the dead (but fresh) seafood we have in kch. so we have to look really closely so as to make sure we dun have to stay back washing dishes after dinner. ;)

here are some of the seafood available. but most of them are half hidden, too shy to come out and post for a picture.

Click pics for larger view

variety of different shells too. wish we tried them all.
and they have fat king mud crab that weighed more than half a kg each. u will love it especially if you are crab roe lovers. we did not order any crab as the minimum portion for the order is 1kg. we won't be able to finish that.

from the pic, did u see the smaller crabs in the red basket? that's soft shell crabs. never see a live one in kch... coz we only get the frozen ones here. some ppl thought it's not healthy. they avoid taking them coz they thought the crab shell is softened by some chemical process. But actually the crabs are going through the natural process of shedding the outer shells. They do this several times a year and so, live soft shell crabs are only available seasonal. whereas the frozen ones are available whole year round.

their famous Matis ('lai niu ha')... it's sth hardly found in kch restaurant. but we do have crayfish. a different look of lobster i would say...

well, none of the oyster or mussel is my favourite. oyster is usually served raw, come with lemon or some special sauce. feel disgusting when looking at ppl putting the raw sticky creature into their mouth. ;)

Green mussle.. that's the only seafood i found cheaper than those available in kch restaurant... in kch normally we get the imported frozen green mussel at least RM40/1kg (after cooked), seldom get the local mussels in restaurants as the flesh are too skiny and not presentable to be served on plate.. :) but there in KK we can get Fresh + Live + Fat green mussel at RM20/1kg only... hmmm...

so our selection from the tank: coral trout, lobster, and snail... snail? u will see it later.

there are grd floor and 1st floor. seem like there are separate rooms in the 1st floor, very nicely decorated. could be for reservation or functional use.

ok here comes our orders for the dinner.

Lobster in their special sauce. din notice how special the sauce is, coz we are all carried away by the tenderness of the fresh meat.

Coral Trout in Cantonese style which is steamed to the perfection.

Cangkuk Manis or 'Su zai choi'. finally i've chance to try their cangkuk manis. taste as good as our cangkuk manis in kch. although they are different kind of vege, but funny with the same term. and wat's different is that we only take the leaves, not the stem. and it's better known as 'malicai' for the chinese in kch.

and below is the snail we ordered but i have no idea how it was called, have tried once in kch before, and they call it 'Dong Feng Lei'... import from sabah. now i have a chance to try it again in sabah itself. the same way of serving it. steam. i enjoy the fun of pulling out the flesh by picking the hard 'tail' hanging out from the shell. the hard tail is inedible, whereas the rest, u can take it safely. dip with the sauce given, perfect.

yup, the dinner cost damn expensive for only four dishes and the portion of four. but the food is so fresh and taste great that it is definitely worth it.

Sabahan are so lucky.. they are blessed with such fine live seafood in town...

ya.. that seafood dinner of yours is damn expensive. eh.. the sabah cangkuk manis, can we get it here in kch? it looks strangely similar to a type of 'sabah cai' or a type of paku pakis which we cook with belacan.

Eve... duh~~~ RM135 for a lobster??? They really dare to potong people huh. Well, not surprising when I see their signboard have Japanese words on already.

Now, I feel like dragging you to learn diving and teach you how to catch your own lobster. You must follow me to at least experience a snorkelling next time in Kuching. The dinner, it will be fresh seafood, depending on what will be hunted by the guys that day. You know what was my most outrageous experience from the dinner? 13 lobsters and 6 coral trouts, shark and grouper for a dinner of 13 people. Plus another 5 types of dishes. Including 2 drink each person. Do you know how much did we paid? RM13 per person. No kidding!

jann, i've never seen the sabah cangkuk manis in kch ler.. the sabah cai that u mean which look a little like fern, is another different veg. u will see that in my upcoming post.

ff, we asked for a small lobster but it turned out to be almost 1kg.. Big! so u pay 13 for a dinner worth more than a hundred.. ok count me in next time! hahaha..
